Venues & Accommodation

Note: if you registered online (not via phone) please send an email to info@culturalfutures.place.net.nz indicating:

  1. Meal preferences/requirements
  2. Are you staying on the marae, and if so, can you provide a sleeping bag or do you require it to be provided?
  3. Will you be requiring bus transport to Hoani Waititi from AUT on Friday?

It is very important that we have this information from you!

Maps showing the location of Hoani Waititi and the inner-city venues are available (approx 150k PDFs).

The symposium will be held at Hoani Waititi, an inter-tribal urban marae in West Auckland with a strong educational and artistic kaupapa, which will firmly ground the dialogue in a local context, responsive to the issues of indigenous self-determination and cultural development. As the site of the first Kura Kaupapa Maori (Maori primary school) launched in 1985, the venue has played a significant role in New Zealand's cultural development, and continues to take a leading role in contemporary political and cultural affairs. Information on marae protocol will be provided, however if you wish to learn more about general marae protocol a good primer is at maori.org.nz

Accommodation on Friday and Saturday night will be provided in the marae complex, in communal sleeping quarters. Usually, manuhiri/visitors bring sleeping bags with mattresses, pillows, and sheets supplied, but if you're coming from a long way away we understand this might be difficult, so we will sort out full bedding if you let us know. The stayover on the marae is integral to the event experience (and you'll find it a restful sleeping experience if you bring earplugs :), but if you need to retreat to a hotel after the evening proceedings, nearby accommodation is at the Lincoln Hotel, Dalma Court Motor Inn, or the Sunset Lodge.

Other Venues and Accommodation

The opening exhibition and pre-symposium expert panel will be held at St Paul Street Gallery, St Paul St, in Auckland's central business district. It's part of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) School of Art and Design building, where the Monday workshops are also held (signs will be up to direct you from the gallery on Monday).

The Sunday night event will be at Galatos, approximately 1km away from AUT. (walking distance in sensible shoes, or a short cab ride). Galatos is in the K road cafe district and Sunday dinner is readily available at restaurants, cafes, or cheap and excellent Asian food halls nearby.

We recommend that you book accommodation in the CBD for the nights other than Friday and Saturday. We will secure an area adjacent to the gallery where you can store your luggage from Friday until Sunday, however, we ask that you keep your valuables with you or leave them at your hotel's safe.
